You may be a basketball trainer that is just starting out, or you may have been training players for years. Either way though here are a few basics of being a trainer that you should look at before you start training or as a refresher if you have already been doing it for a while.
One of the first things you want to do is evaluate the player(s) that you are training and develop a workout specifically for them. Not every player needs to work on the same things, so having a general workout for all your players to do is not the best use of time. Break up your players in specific groups according to what they need to work on.
Find the right balance between working on their strengths and their weaknesses. For example, if you have a big man that is going to primarily post up in a game then mainly work on his/her post moves, but still work on other areas of his/her game like ball handling, shooting, etc. just don’t spend as much time on them.
Teach the players why they are doing a skill a certain way. That way they will be more likely to actually do it the right way when they are in a game or working out on their own. If they aren’t using the skills that they are being taught then the training is not working the right way. So this is a pretty important step in the basketball training process.
