Tight Spaces Basketball Finishing Drill

Tight Spaces Basketball Finishing Drill

When a player gets past their defender off of the dribble, they might not always have a wide-open lane to the basket. There may be congestion and bodies in the way that they have to navigate through. However, the original defender is still trying to fight to get back in the play and cut the ball handler off again. That is why once the dribbler beats their defender, they need to cut them off and keep them on their hip.

This basketball finishing drill will be able to simulate this game type situation and then help the player get a lot of repetitions at the move. A big key to this basketball drill is making sure that the player keeps their eyes up and sees the floor as they do the drill. The reason why is because, in a game, the player needs to be able to read the defense and then take what is given. If they force it in there, it will usually result in a turnover or a bad shot. This is a great ball-handling and finishing drill to add to your basketball training regiment.

Basketball Drill Instructions

  • The player is going to start just inside half court with a token defender on them.
  • They will take a couple of dribbles and then make a move to get past the defender.
  • Immediately after they get past their defender, they will cut them off and put them on their hip.
  • As they are doing this, they will slow down at the top of the key (simulating waiting for a driving lane), and then they are going to drive to the basket and shoot a one-foot runner.
  • You can work on different finishes as well, and you should work on finishing both ways.
