Tough Catch and Finish Basketball Drill

Tough Catch Finish Basketball Drill

When a guard drives past their defender down the lane, the post defender will usually step up to help. This is a great time for a dump-off pass to the offensive post player for a finish. However, the problem is that these passes are often in tight spaces and not always thrown with the greatest accuracy. So it is important that the post player develops great hands and can gather these tough catches and still be able to finish around the basket.

This basketball post moves drill will help develop the post player’s hands by making them catch a bad pass off of the toss backs (or coaches pass). It will give the post player many repetitions at these types of passes and allow them to work on different types of finishes around the basket. Along with this basketball drill allowing for a ton of quality repetitions, it will also train the post player to naturally slide to create space on a drive and then catch the ball moving to the basket.

Goals of the Drill

  • Work on catching, gathering, and finishing bad passes in the paint area.

Coaching Points

  • Gather the basketball as quickly and as cleanly as you can, and then finish right away.
  • Challenge yourself to be athletic and get up off of the ground with every finish.
  • Gather the basketball with a strong base, so the defender can’t bump you out of your finish in a game.
  • If you don’t have a toss back to use, just have a coach or partner stand on either side of the paint and make a bad pass to the post player.
  • If the player bobbles the ball, just move onto the next one.

Basketball Drill Instructions

  • Set up two toss backs on either side of the paint just above the block, angle them in towards the paint.
  • The passer will be about even between the two toss backs, and the rebounder(s) will be on the baseline.
  • The player is going to start right in front of the basket with their back towards the baseline.
  • When the drill starts, the passer will throw one of the heavy balls off either toss back.
  • At this time, the player must quickly gather the ball and then immediately turn and finish at the basket with a dunk or hook shot.
  • After they finish, they will immediately get ready for the next ball.
  • The drill will go until the player makes the needed number of shots (usually 6-8).
  • After completing all of the makes, repeat the same drill over again, but this time using basketballs instead of heavy balls.

  1. Great drill but in Europe with a wider key there is far more distance for the post player to cover after the dump off.
If there is a foul called on the driving player then only the foul is called, recorded and no shots only a 14 or shot clock time remaining given for an inbound ball from the endline.
