You really have to stress dribbling with your eyes up for younger basketball players, or they will continue to dribble with them down, and it will set them back as they get older and begin to play against better competition. This tennis ball toss basketball dribbling drill will help work on the player’s ball handling, but it will also help the player learn to dribble with their eyes up and develop their hand-eye coordination.

Whether the player is the primary ball-handler or not, this is a good basketball drill to do because you are developing the player’s hands. Also, learning to dribble the basketball and not having to focus on it is good practice for when you are trying to read the defense and run the offense as a ball handler. Basketball Drill Instructions

  • One player will start on the baseline, and the other player will face them 4-5 feet away.
  • Each player needs to have a basketball in their right hand and a tennis ball in their left hand.
  • They will both start dribbling the basketballs and moving up the floor.
  • At the same time, they are going to underhand toss each other their tennis balls.
  • While the tennis balls are up in the air, they will do a between the legs dribble move with the basketball and then catch the tennis ball with the hand that just was dribbling the basketball.
  • They will take a dribble or two and then repeat the move but with the other hand this time.
  • The players will continue this all the way up the floor to the opposite baseline and then come back doing the same thing.
  • That way, both players will go forward and backward.
