Wall Tennis Ball Behind the Back Basketball Dribbling Drill

 

Whether you are a big man or a guard, it is important to have good hands and good hand-eye coordination. A great way to develop both of those things is with wall tennis ball basketball drills. For this basketball drill, you have to develop a quick reaction to the ball coming off the wall, as well as the ability to quickly catch the tennis ball while also maintaining your dribble. This basketball dribbling drill may be difficult at first, but stick with it and challenge yourself to develop quick and soft hands.

Drill Name: Wall Tennis Ball Behind the Back Basketball Dribbling Drill

Equipment Needed: 1 Basketball, 6-10 Tennis Balls, and a Partner.

Goals of the Drill

  • Work on ball handling while also developing quick hands.

 

Coaching Points

  • Keep your dribble low and tight, and control the ball as you slide back and forth.
  • React as quickly as you can once you see the tennis ball coming.

 

Basketball Drill Instructions

  • Begin facing the wall about 3-4 feet back with a basketball and have the coach/partner stand behind the player with all of the tennis balls.
  • Have the player get into a defensive stance and dribble to the left with his left hand.
  • The coach will throw the tennis ball against the wall, and as soon as the player sees the tennis ball, they will make a behind the back move and then catch the tennis ball with their left hand.
  • If the player caught the ball, he/she will drop it behind them and immediately slide to the right, dribbling with their right hand.
  • Every time the coach throws a tennis ball, the player will make the move, catch the ball, and then change direction.
  • For this drill, you can go for a certain number of catches, tosses, or time.
  • When the coach throws the ball, they need to bounce it off the wall to the player’s side that is dribbling the basketball, and the coach can determine how hard they throw it depending on the skill level and age of the player.
