In a basketball game, when you are handling the ball, you never know when the defender will try and reach to steal the basketball. When this happens, you have to make a quick move to protect the ball, or it will be stolen.
With this basketball dribbling drill, when you see the tennis ball hit off the wall, you are simulating that you have to make a quick crossover move and change direction. You will be able to work on ball handling as well as hand-eye coordination with this basketball drill.

Goals of the Drill
- Work on your ball handling as well as your hands.
Coaching Points
- Keep your dribble tight to your body and stay low the whole time when you slide.
- Be ready to catch the ball at any time while you are sliding; keep your head up.
- If you are sliding right, you will dribble with your right hand. If you are sliding left, you will dribble with your left hand.
Basketball Drill Instructions
- Start facing the wall with a basketball about 3-4 feet off of the wall.
- The coach will have all the tennis balls and stand a couple of feet behind the player.
- Have the player begin to slide left and dribble with their left hand.
- He/she will continue to slide left until the coach throws a tennis ball against the wall.
- When the player sees the tennis ball hit the wall, he needs to cross the basketball over and then catch the tennis ball with the hand that just crossed the ball over.
- Now the player will slide right and dribble with his right hand until the next tennis ball comes and he/she crosses over again.
- The coach needs to try and throw the tennis ball to the side that the player is dribbling the ball, and depending on the level of the player, you can change up how hard you throw the tennis ball.
