X Out Basketball Shooting Drill

X Out Basketball Shooting Drill

Footwork is a huge indicator of whether a shot is going to go in or not. The better and more efficient a basketball player’s footwork is coming into their shot, the more chance they will have of making that shot. That is why it is essential to not only work on stationary catch and shoot shots when doing basketball training but also work on coming into shots from different spots on the floor.

The X Out Basketball Shooting Drill will work on coming into your shot correctly and then doing it the same way every time. This consistency will really help to develop good footwork habits that will transfer over to a game. This basketball shooting drill also allows the other players to work on rebounding and then making on-time, on-target passes to the shooter.

Goals of the Drill

  • Work on a player’s footwork and having them come into their shot the same way every time.
  • It can be used as a conditioning drill if the number of repetitions is increased.
  • Great for working on having players make on time, on target passes to shooters.

Coaching Points

  • The player needs to be down ready and come into their shot the same way every time.
  • As they are coming into their shot, they need to have their butt down, show their hands, and attack the pass as they catch the ball and enter their shooting motion.
  • They need to also make sure and finish their shot strong by holding their follow-through and not running off to the next shot prematurely.
  • If doing this drill for conditioning, the player must stay locked in on every repetition, especially as they begin to get tired.
  • Passer needs to be working on throwing on-time, on-target passes.

Basketball Drill Instructions

  • The shooter will start at the right elbow, and the passer/rebounder will have the ball in the paint.
  • When the drill starts, the player will receive a pass from the passer and then shoot a catch and shoot shot from the elbow.
  • After the player shoots that shot, they will run out, touch half court, and then run back into the left elbow for another catch and shoot shot.
  • After each shot, the player will sprint out to halfcourt and back in for a shot on the opposite elbow.
  • This pattern will continue for the desired number of repetitions.

Recommended Time, Scoring, and Repetitions

  • If doing this drill for repetitions, 6-10 repetitions is typically a good number. If you are looking to add a conditioning aspect to the drill, though, feel free to increase the number of repetitions or do multiple sets with a short break in between.
  • You can also do this drill for a set amount of time. If doing a set time, give the shooter a number to beat when it comes to repetitions, makes, or both. This will add a competition aspect to the drill.
  • One of the best ways to do this basketball drill for more advanced players is by only counting makes. This will force players to stay locked in mentally and also be able to fight through poor shooting spouts during this drill.
    • To make this drill even more challenging, have missed shots count as a minus one in the total made count.
