Zone Basketball Plays

There are all kinds of different zones that basketball defenses can use, and as a basketball coach, you must prepare for the ones that you think the other team might run against your team. It is important to have good zone basketball plays that you can use to get some easy baskets against the zone.

These zone basketball plays come with a video breaking down the play and then written text explaining what you should be looking for when you run the play.

There are two different types of zone offense that your basketball team can run. There are zone sets and motion zone offenses. Both are good to have in your playbook because you will need them to keep the defense on their heels and off-balance.

Motion Zone Basketball Plays

A good motion zone offense can usually transfer from one similar zone (2-3/3-2) to another pretty easily because it is all about just moving the ball and cutting. The key to a good motion zone is teaching your players what to look for in the play. It is all about reading the defense and then taking what they are giving, but if your players don’t know what to look for when they run the offense, it will not work very well.

When running a motion offense, it is important to have good spacing and quick ball reversals. If you have a player who catches and holds the basketball every time they touch it, the offense will not work very well. You must get the defense to shift and then attack them when they are out of position.

Set Zone Basketball Plays

Zone sets are designed to get a specific shot by overloading a particular spot in the zone or by using some kind of misdirection. There are different set basketball plays to get a 3 point shot, lob, post up, etc. When running zone set plays, it is important that the timing is right. If the shooter pops open in the corner for a shot, but the ball is still being swung around the top of the key, it will be too late, and the defense will recover in time. Make sure that your players are not catching and holding the ball but that they are keeping it moving.
