Lob zone basketball plays are all about getting the defense to shift and focus one thing, while you are really running a lob play on the back side. Getting the defense to suck in and then setting good screens are needed to run this type of action. Lob plays can be beneficial because they can be easy buckets, but they can also be really good momentum builders for your team.
Probably the biggest key to running a lob play against the zone is surprise. It is not like a ball screen action where you can still run it whether the defense knows that is what you are going to do or not. It takes misdirection by having ball movement and player movement through the zone, and then a well timed pass to a player that can jump, and also finish at the basket. Make the defense lock in on the ball and forget about the backside of the zone, and you will be able to set up a lob play.
