Zipper basketball plays are a type of down screen play where the player will start on the block area and then get a down screen so that they can come right up the middle of the paint and get a catch at the top of the key area. The zipper screen can be for either a guard or a big man, depending on what type of play it is.
It is a really good action for a shooter to get a shot or for one of your better isolation scorers to get a catch on the floor where they are comfortable with the ball. When the shooter comes up for the shot, they are really going to have to focus on having good footwork and getting squared up on the shot. So when doing your basketball shooting drills, make sure that you work on this type of game situation shooting.
It is important that you set up the zipper screening action by first using some sort of ball reversal or by having the shooter first set an off the ball screen. This will make the shooter’s defender help off and lose track of the shooter, and before they recognize it, they are getting screened by the zipper action.
