A 2-3 zone is probably one of the most common zones you will face as a basketball coach. That is why you must have some good zone basketball set plays and motion offenses that you can use. Otherwise, your basketball team will fall into the trap of passing the ball around the perimeter before eventually putting up a low-percentage shot, and this is exactly what the defense wants from you.
These 2-3 zone basketball plays will cover a variety of different plays that you can use against a zone and have success with your team. All of our basketball plays come with a clipped-up video of the actual play and text on what you should be looking for as your team runs the play.
The Importance of 2-3 Zone Basketball Plays
The defense’s goal on a 2-3 zone is to get the offense to become stagnant and shoot a lot of long, contested 3 point shots. That means that the offense should want to do exactly the opposite of that, so here are a few really good ways to attack a 2-3 zone defense in basketball.
The first key is going to be ball movement and player movement. Keep the ball moving from side to side and inside out on the zone, don’t let your players catch and hold the ball. Also, make sure that your players are cutting hard through the zone and being a threat to score as they do.
Penetration is the second key. One of the best ways to beat a zone defense in basketball is to drive a gap and then kick the ball out to an open teammate. Driving a gap needs to be done after a ball reversal, though, and the driver should not be looking to over-dribble.
Ball screens are something that most teams don’t take full advantage of against a zone, but they can be very effective if done the right way. Anytime you can get two defensive players guarding the ball and then kick out, it usually ends up being good offense.
Zone Basketball Plays Teaching Points
As a basketball coach, one of the most important aspects to focus on during practice is executing effective plays. This requires not only physical skills, but also mental preparation and strategy. In this guide, we will discuss zone basketball plays and some teaching points that can help your team succeed in these types of situations.
Know Your Opponent’s Zone Defense
Before implementing any zone basketball play, it is important to first understand the type of zone defense your opponent is playing. Different zones, such as a 2-3 or 1-3-1, will require different strategies and adjustments. Take the time to scout your opponent and analyze their tendencies on defense.
Ball Movement is Key
Against a zone defense, it is crucial to keep the ball moving quickly from side to side. This forces defenders to shift and opens up gaps in the defense. Emphasize the importance of making crisp and accurate passes to keep the defense on their toes.
Use Screens and Cuts
Screens and cuts can be effective tools in breaking down a zone defense. They can create openings for shooters or cutters to receive the ball in high percentage scoring areas. Make sure your players understand how to set screens and execute cuts properly.
Look for the Gaps
In a zone defense, there will always be gaps or holes that can be exploited. Teach your players to look for these openings and make quick decisions on whether to shoot, drive, or pass.
Utilize High-Low Plays
One effective strategy against a zone defense is running a high-low play where one player sets up high near the free throw line and another player positions themselves low in the paint. This creates confusion for defenders and can lead to easy scoring opportunities.
Practice Communication
Communication is key in executing zone basketball plays successfully. Players must constantly communicate with each other to make quick decisions and find open spaces on the court.
Must-Use 2-3 Zone Basketball Plays
All of these 2-3 zone basketball plays will allow you to find the right play for any situation in a game. With a few of these basketball plays, you can add 6-8 points to your offense when you run into a 2-3 zone defense.
Play #1: Michigan: 2-3 Zone Ball Screen Basketball Play
Whether the defense is a man to man defense or zone defense, the ball screen can still be used. In order for it to work though, the screening action needs to get the defense to suck in and have to help. Otherwise, the defense doesn’t really have to respect the ball screen and can just stay at home in their designated areas. The way that you get the defense to react is by setting a good screen, and then also by having the ball handler be aggressive off of the screen, but without getting in too deep and in trouble.
This Michigan 2-3 zone ball screen play is not one of the most advanced basketball plays out there, but it works when executed well. The ball is reversed to get the defense to shift, and then the ball screen comes right after. A big key for the shooter is being down ready to shoot because if they have to catch and load to shoot, the defender will recover and take away the shot. All of the basketball shooting drills that you do with your team should stress this type of shot preparation.
Play Name: Michigan: 2-3 Zone Ball Screen Basketball Play (12-13)
Play Goal: Use a ball screen on one of the top zone defenders and create a shooting opportunity for the player in the corner.
Play Tips: Needs to be a good legal screen to free up the ball handler and make the baseline defender commit on the help. The shooter needs to be down ready and stepping into their shot as the pass is coming to them.
Play #2: Wallace State: 2-3 Zone Ball Screen Baseline Runner Basketball Play
A lot of teams don’t maximize the ability to run ball screens against a zone defense, but there is a lot of value in being able to ball screen the top of the zone. This Wallace State ball screen baseline runner play uses a ball screen against one of the top defenders, and then sends a runner on the baseline to the corner. The idea is to make one player have to try and guard two and hopefully end up with a quality shot from that situation. Great zone offenses don’t just pass the basketball around the zone, but they look to get penetration, player movement, and ball movement.
Play Name: Wallace State: 2-3 Zone Ball Screen Baseline Runner Basketball Play
Play Goal: Set a ball screen on one of the top two defenders, look to get penetration, and then swing the basketball to the player running the baseline for a shot in the corner.

Play #3: Pitt Panthers: 2-3 Zone Ball Screen Offense (11-12)
This is one of the more simple basketball plays, but it shows that ball screens can be very effective against a 2-3 zone defense. The key to this zone offense is maintaining good spacing and putting a defensive player within the zone in conflict. Anytime that you can make a defensive player think and have to choose how he is going to guard an action, you create a chance for defensive break downs. So hopefully with this ball screen play you will get some miscommunication between the top players, and there will be a breakdown which allows a shot, drive, or chance to set up another teammate.
Play Name: Pitt Panthers: 2-3 Zone Ball Screen Offense (11-12)
Play Goal: Screen one of the top defenders in the zone and then play off of the ball screen.

The best way to prepare against a zone is to have different basketball set plays as well as motion offensive plays that you can use. Anytime you can get the zone shifting with ball movement good things are usually going to happen. By getting the weak side of the zone to focus on the ball and then screening them in you open up a lob opportunity. A lob play against a zone is all about selling a diversion action, timing, and then making a good pass.
Play Name: Wallace State: 2-3 Zone Double Back Screen Lob Basketball Play (11-12)
Play Goal: Make the defense focus on the ball, and then screen the backside for a lob.
Play Tips: Reverse the ball a couple of times before throwing the lob. Make sure that the timing is right and that a good legal screen is set on the back side.
Play #5: Wake Forest: 2-3 Zone Ball Screen Basketball Play (11-12)
Ball screen basketball plays can be used against the zone because it is just one more way to overload an area on the zone. It makes the defense decide how they are going to guard the ball screen, and what they are going to leave open. If the defender goes over the ball screen then the other top defender will have to help, and if the ball defender goes under this opens up a shot for the ball handler or a re-screen.

Play #7: Georgia Southern: 2-3 Zone Post Flash, Baseline Runner Basketball Play (11-12)
It is not just enough to pass the basketball around the zone and jack up 3 point shots. Your basketball team needs to be able to go inside out for quality shots. You can get inside touches by passing or driving the ball. Both work well against a zone and it is important that you use both to get good shots for your team because inside out 3 pointers are much higher percentage shots for your team and they make the defense work.
This zone basketball play is going to have a baseline runner and a player flashing in the zone. Hopefully, this will open up some great scoring opportunities for your offense, and keep your players from being stagnant on the offensive end.

Play #11: Villanova Wildcats: 2-3 Zone Ball Screen Baseline Runner Basketball Play (11-12)
Because each defender in a zone is designed a specific area to guard a ball screen usually works well because it overloads a specific portion of the zone. As long as the other 3 players are not standing and watching the ball screen, it will usually end up in some good action. The man coming off of the screen is rarely going to be the one shooting the ball. It is his/her job to get the defense to suck in and then kick out to an open teammate. This basketball play is also going to have a baseline runner as the ball handler comes off the screen. By doing this the zone will be even more overloaded.
Play Name: Villanova Wildcats: 2-3 Zone Ball Screen Baseline Runner Basketball Play (11-12)
Play Goal: Play out of the ball screen and get a shot or attack again off of the kick out.

If you can set up a basketball play that does all three of these things you are usually going to end up with an open shot. It is important that the players who are not in the direct play are still a threat to score. They need to be down ready to shoot, drive, or swing the ball on the kick out. If they are not a threat to score then the defense will just suck in without and consequence and the play won’t work.
Play Name: Villanova Wildcats: 2-3 Zone Cross Screen Side Ball Screen Basketball Play (11-12)
Play Goal: Look inside for the cross screen action and then if nothing is there swing the ball and play out of the ball screen.

Play #14: Villanova Wildcats: 2-3 Zone Double High Ball Screen Basketball Play (11-12)
A good way to beat a zone is to overload it at a specific area. In this double high ball screen basketball play you are essentially playing 3 on 2 at the top of the zone. With the ball screens being set to the outside there is no help for the defender getting screened, especially if there are shooters in the corner.
