Tennis Ball Toss Behind the Back Competition Basketball Drill

 

By making your players compete during a basketball drill, you will challenge them and get more out of each player, especially if there is a consequence for losing the drill. The idea behind this tennis ball toss basketball dribbling drill is to force each player to get outside their comfort zone and to get them to go their absolute fastest and hardest during the drill.

If the players know that running is coming for the loser, they will give that much more of an effort during this basketball dribbling drill. This is just one tool for promoting a competitive atmosphere in your practices or workouts. Along with the competition, you are working on hand-eye coordination and ball-handling, becoming a better and more skilled player.

Drill Name: Tennis Ball Toss Behind the Back Competition Basketball Drill

Equipment Needed: 1 basketball and 1 tennis ball per player.

Goals of the Drill

  • Work on dribbling and improving your hands and ball handling.

 

Coaching Points

  • Get a good rhythm going, and try to push yourself to go as fast as you can.
  • Stay low to the ground and dribble the basketball as hard and fast as you can.
  • Give yourself a good toss with the tennis ball each time.
  • If you drop the tennis ball on the move, it does not count as a rep.

 

Basketball Drill Instructions

  • Have each player start with a tennis ball and a basketball.
  • When the coach says go, the players are going to begin to dribble the basketball.
  • At their own pace, they will toss the tennis ball up in the air, make a behind the back dribble move, and then catch the tennis ball with the hand that just was dribbling the basketball.
  • They are going to continue doing the move back and forth, tossing the tennis ball each time.
  • The player that completes the most move in 30 seconds wins.
