This is a plyometric exercise, and the purpose of this basketball vertical jump drill is to develop your quick jump ability. You are using the force of coming down off of the box against yourself on the next jump.
By using this force against yourself, you are training your muscles even harder and tricking your body into jumping even higher. Make sure that you are not doing these exercises on a hard surface like cement because the continual strain is bad for your knees.
